1. Jonquière en bref

Jonquière est l'arrondissement industriel et commercial (~55 000 habitants).

Composé de Jonquière, Arvida et Kénogami — chacun avec son histoire. Arvida est célèbre comme ville-modèle d'aluminerie du début du 20e siècle.

Jonquière at a glance. Jonquière is the industrial and commercial borough of the city of Saguenay. With about 55,000 residents, it's one of the largest boroughs. It comprises several former neighbourhoods — Jonquière, Arvida and Kénogami — each with its history and character. Arvida is famous across the Americas as a planned aluminum-company town from the early 20th century.

2. Arvida — un patrimoine unique

Arvida est née en 1926 autour de l'aluminerie. Une des seules villes en Amérique conçues comme un projet urbain complet pour les ouvriers.

Arvida — a unique heritage. Arvida was born in 1926 around Alcoa's smelter, later Rio Tinto. It's one of North America's few towns built as a complete urban project — homes, schools, hospital, parks — for aluminum workers. It was recognized as a historic district in 2018. If you live there, many single-family homes retain their original architecture.

Practical errands. Jonquière's municipal service point offers most City Hall services. Shops, banks and services are mainly along boulevard du Saguenay, in the Place du Royaume area — the region's largest mall.

4. Une ville d'industrie

Jonquière vit largement de l'industrie. Rio Tinto y exploite Arvida et Vaudreuil — deux des plus grandes alumineries.

Beaucoup de familles comptent un parent ou grand-parent ayant travaillé chez Alcan ou Rio Tinto.

An industrial town. Jonquière lives largely from industry. Rio Tinto operates two of the region's largest smelters: Arvida and Vaudreuil. Local culture is strongly shaped by generations who worked at the smelter. Many families count a parent or grandparent who worked at Alcan or Rio Tinto.
