1. Cinq secteurs, cinq ambiances

Gatineau est composée de cinq secteurs distincts :

  • Hull — centre urbain dense, près des ponts vers Ottawa, populaire chez les jeunes professionnels
  • Aylmer — plus résidentiel, bordant la rivière, grande communauté anglophone
  • Gatineau — secteur d'origine, central
  • Buckingham et Masson-Angers — plus suburbains, traditionnellement francophones
Five sectors, five vibes. Gatineau has five distinct sectors. Hull is the urban centre, dense and near the Ottawa bridges, popular with young professionals. Aylmer is more residential, along the river, with a large English-speaking community. Gatineau, the original sector, is central. Buckingham and Masson-Angers are more suburban and traditionally French-speaking.

What it costs. Gatineau's rental market is more affordable than Ottawa's, which is why many federal workers live here. Budget roughly $1,100 to $1,400 per month for a 4½ — a two-bedroom apartment. Hull near the bridges is the priciest; Buckingham and Masson-Angers are cheaper.

If you work in Ottawa, living in Gatineau has advantages: lower rents, often-lower Quebec taxes for middle and lower incomes, the Quebec health plan, subsidized daycares at $9 a day. Disadvantages: interprovincial taxation can complicate tax filing, and some federal employers prefer Ontario-resident employees.

  • Électricité : Hydro-Québec (seul fournisseur)
  • Gaz naturel : Énergir (présent dans plusieurs résidences)
  • Internet : Vidéotron, Bell, Cogeco
Essential utilities. For electricity, Hydro-Québec is the sole provider. Natural gas, if present, is provided by Énergir. Internet is offered by Vidéotron, Bell or Cogeco. In Gatineau, many homes have natural gas heating — check before renting.
