1. STO — your local network

The STO, or Société de transport de l'Outaouais, runs the buses in Gatineau.

The network covers the five sectors: Aylmer, Hull, Gatineau, Buckingham and Masson-Angers. Several Rapibus lines cross the city quickly on a dedicated lane.

2. The Ottawa connection

Many Gatineau residents work in Ottawa. Several STO lines cross the bridges to Ottawa, and several OC Transpo lines come into Hull.

If you commute daily between Gatineau and Ottawa, the Multi card lets you use both networks on a single combined fare.

3. The Rapibus

The Rapibus is the STO's bus rapid transit system, with its own dedicated lane separated from car traffic.

It connects east Gatineau to downtown Hull, then to the Ottawa bridges. It's the fastest way to cross the city.

4. Fares and cards

STO offers several passes: single trip, daily, monthly. The Multi STO–OC Transpo card is needed if you travel regularly to Ottawa.

Several Express and Rapibus routes have rush-hour surcharges.

5. Pass options at a glance

STO passes vary based on your travel frequency and on whether or not you cross to Ottawa. Here are the main options and typical use for each.

Specific fares change annually — check sto.ca before choosing a pass. Rule of thumb: if you cross to Ottawa more than three times a week, the Multi is almost always cheaper than buying separate OC Transpo fares. Note that young children ride free with a paying adult and that STO offers reduced rates for students full-time.

6. Understanding the bridges between Gatineau and Ottawa

Five bridges connect Gatineau to Ottawa, which entirely shapes commuter life. The Portage bridge and the Alexandra bridge are the most used by STO buses from Hull. The Macdonald-Cartier bridge handles a lot of through traffic.

At rush hour, the bridges become major bottlenecks — exactly where the Rapibus and reserved lanes outpace cars.

7. Practical tips for new riders

A few useful habits from your first weeks in Gatineau:

  • Download the STO mobile app — it shows your buses in real time and flags delays.
  • Learn the sector names — a stop in Aylmer is nowhere near a stop in Buckingham.
  • In winter, build a few minutes of buffer — buses can run late on icy roads.
  • Check both schedules if you cross to Ottawa — STO and OC Transpo don't auto-sync.

8. Frequently asked questions

The most common questions from new Gatineau residents about STO and OC Transpo: Multi card, children's fares, delay handling and the car decision.

How exactly does the Multi STO–OC Transpo card work?

The Multi card is a monthly subscription that includes unlimited use of STO buses in Gatineau plus unlimited use of OC Transpo buses and the O-Train in Ottawa.

You only pay one monthly fare, and you don't have to tap a separate card or pay extra at each bridge crossing. The card is loaded onto a physical STO Multi support, sold at STO points of service or online via your STO account. It's the standard option for anyone with a job, school or studies on the Ottawa side.

Do my children need to pay to ride the bus with me?

Young children accompanied by a paying adult ride free up to a certain age — STO publishes the exact limit on its website.

Older children and teenagers fall under reduced student rates on proof. If your child rides alone to school, look into the STO student passes, often the best option for the school year. The grid changes from year to year, so check sto.ca at the start of each school year.

What should I do if my Rapibus is delayed or cancelled?

The STO mobile app is the fastest way to know what's going on — it shows real-time positions and posts service alerts.

If a Rapibus is severely delayed, watch the next bus on the same line: frequencies are usually high enough that the next one is only a few minutes away. In a major outage (heavy snow, accident on the reserved lane), STO usually announces it on its app and on its X (formerly Twitter) account. As a last resort, regular STO lines sharing part of the route can serve as plan B.

Is it worth keeping a car if I work in Ottawa?

It depends on your schedule and where you live. At rush hour, the Rapibus combined with OC Transpo is often faster than the car — the bridges to Ottawa form major bottlenecks.

A monthly Multi pass also costs much less than a parking spot in downtown Ottawa, where space is limited and expensive. On the other hand, if you have to pick up children, do groceries far from STO lines, or work outside standard hours, the car keeps its usefulness. Many Gatineau families end up with a single car instead of two by relying on the bus daily.

Author's Note: If you work in Ottawa, the Multi card is almost always worth it. The Rapibus is your best friend: dedicated lane, high frequency, far faster than driving at rush hour.
