Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the CCB and the Allocation famille?

The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is paid by the federal government; the Allocation famille is paid by Quebec (Retraite Québec). Both are automatic once you file your tax returns, tax-free, and reduced based on your family income. You can receive both at the same time.

How much is the CCB in 2026?

For the July 2025 to June 2026 benefit year, the maximum is $7,997 per child under 6 and $6,748 per child aged 6 to 17. The maximum is paid if your adjusted family net income is below $37,487, then it decreases gradually above that.

How does income reduce the benefits?

Each program has its own thresholds. The CCB decreases at rates that depend on the number of children once income is above $37,487 (then $81,222). Quebec's Allocation famille decreases by 4% of income above $59,369 (couple) or $43,280 (single parent), down to a guaranteed minimum per child.

Do immigrant families qualify?

Generally you must reside in Quebec, be responsible for a child and have an eligible status (citizen, permanent resident, certain temporary-resident situations). File your tax returns from the first year: that is what triggers the calculation and payments.

Simplified estimate based on the current benefit year. It excludes the child disability supplement, shared custody, and Quebec's single-parent supplement (up to ~$1,055/yr). Amounts are indexed and reviewed each year (July for the CCB, January for Quebec).

Author's note: the single most important thing is to file your tax returns every year, even with no income. That is what triggers the calculation of both benefits — many new families go months without receiving a cent simply because their first return wasn't filed.
