Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the basic and special plans?
The basic plan pays lower benefits but for longer: maternity 18 weeks at 70%, paternity 5 weeks at 70%, parental 32 weeks (7 at 70% then 25 at 55%). The special plan pays more but for less time: maternity 15 weeks at 75%, paternity 3 weeks at 75%, parental 25 weeks at 75%. The choice is irrevocable and made when you apply.
What income are benefits based on?
On your average weekly income, up to the maximum insurable income, which is $103,000 in 2026. Above that ceiling, the benefit no longer increases.
Can parental weeks be shared between parents?
Yes. Parental benefit weeks can be shared between both parents however they wish. Maternity weeks (for the mother) and paternity weeks (for the father) are specific to each parent and not transferable.
Does this calculator cover adoption?
No. Adoption benefits have their own week structure. This tool estimates maternity, paternity and parental benefits at birth. Check QPIP for adoption.
Is my data saved?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser: no information is sent to or stored on our servers.

Sources and references
Simplified estimate of benefits at birth. The official QPIP simulator remains the reference for your exact situation (adoption, variable income, sharing of weeks).
Author's note: compare both plans before choosing — the decision is irrevocable. As a rule, if you plan to take all your leave, the basic plan pays more in total; the special plan suits you better if you want a higher income over a shorter period.
