Parc à Laval

Un parc nature à Laval.

1. Centre de la nature — Laval's green heart

The Centre de la nature, in the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul sector, is Laval's largest urban park. It spans about 50 hectares with a lake, walking trails, picnic areas, a farm with animals, a greenhouse, and an outdoor climbing wall.

In summer, you can rent paddle boats; in winter, the lake freezes into a skating rink. Entry is free, and parking too.

2. Other parks worth discovering

Laval has over 200 neighbourhood parks. A few worth the detour:

  • Bois Papineau — a large urban forest with trails
  • Berge des Baigneurs — an urban beach on Rivière des Mille Îles
  • Berge des Goélands — ideal for sunsets
  • Parc des Prairies — popular for family picnics

The full list and facilities are on Laval.ca.

3. Organized sports and registration

The City of Laval offers hundreds of sports activities each season: minor hockey, soccer, baseball, swimming, gymnastics, martial arts, dance.

Registration opens on specific dates, several months before the season starts, and many popular sports fill up within hours. Sign up via the Mon dossier portal at Laval.ca or directly with the neighbourhood sports association.

4. The bike network

Laval is well served by bike paths. The network spans several hundred kilometres and connects to the Route verte, Quebec's provincial cycling network.

You can reach Montreal, Boisbriand and Terrebonne without leaving a protected path. The linear park along Rivière des Mille Îles is especially popular for Sunday cycling.

5. Winter activities

Winter in Laval doesn't mean staying home. The city maintains several outdoor skating rinks for free, cross-country ski trails, and snowshoe trails.

The Centre de la nature has the largest rink — a skating loop around the lake. Several park chalets are open to warm up between outings.

6. The riverbanks and Rivière des Mille Îles

Laval is surrounded by water: the Rivière des Prairies to the south separates Laval from Montreal, and the Rivière des Mille Îles to the north separates it from the north shore. Several municipal riverbanks are set up for picnics, swimming or boat launches.

The Berge des Baigneurs offers a supervised urban beach in summer. The Parc de la Rivière-des-Mille-Îles, run by a non-profit, offers rentals of canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, plus guided tours in a large voyageur canoe.

It's one of Greater Montreal's most accessible paddling spots for family paddling.

7. Libraries and cultural programming

Leisure in Laval isn't just outdoors. The libraries network runs free programming year-round: storytimes for kids, craft workshops, book clubs, lectures, computer training.

The Maison des arts de Laval, the André-Mathieu hall and Place Bell present a season of shows — theatre, music, comedy, dance — many at affordable prices. Also watch for summer festivals like Mosaïculture and the free park concerts in July and August.

8. Fees and access at a glance

A summary of Laval's main leisure venues with their access status. Most parks and outdoor rinks are free for everyone. Some activities charge fees and give a reduced rate for residents of Laval with proof of address.

To confirm fees and availability for a specific activity, use the Mon dossier portal at Laval.ca or call 311. Several activities with reduced fees have limited spots and require advance registration — don't assume a place will be open on the day.

9. Frequently asked questions

The most common questions from new Laval residents about parks and leisure: whether you pay to skate or ski at Centre de la nature, whether you can bring your dog to parks, when municipal sports registration opens, and where to find a public pool.

Do you pay to skate or cross-country ski at Centre de la nature?

No. Access to the outdoor skating loop and the cross-country ski trails at Centre de la nature is free, like the park entrance and parking. You bring your own skates or skis.

Equipment rental is offered on site at a modest fee during the season, useful if you don't want to invest right away. Trails are groomed regularly during the snow season; check trail condition on Laval.ca before going.

Can you bring your dog to parks in Laval?

It depends on the park. Most neighbourhood parks accept dogs on a leash; a few have dedicated off-leash areas. Centre de la nature has its own rules — check the signs at the entrance.

Always pick up after your dog: a city bylaw applies and 311 receives complaints. The full list of dog parks is on Laval.ca under animaux.

When does municipal sports registration open?

Most sports follow seasonal calendars: hockey and skating in late summer for the winter season, soccer and baseball in winter for the spring-summer season, swim lessons several times a year. The City publishes exact dates a few weeks in advance on the Mon dossier portal at Laval.ca.

Many popular activities — children's swim, mini-soccer, hockey for ages 5 to 8 — fill in the first hours; create your account ahead of time and log in the morning registration opens.

Where can you find a public pool in Laval?

Laval has several public indoor and outdoor pools spread across the territory, plus splash pads in many neighbourhood parks for hot summer days.

The indoor pools operate year-round with public swim, lap swim and lessons. Outdoor pools are open from late June to late August. Schedules and addresses are on Laval.ca under loisirs et sports — piscines.

Author's Note: The secret to enjoying winter in Laval is to go outside instead of avoiding it. An hour of free skating at the Centre de la nature on a Saturday morning changes the whole week.
