Depuis, pendant, il y a, dans: placing things in time
Four little words are used to place things in time: depuis, il y a, pendant, dans.

“Depuis” goes with the present tense even when the action began long ago.

Note · common mistake
“Arriver” is a moment, not a stretch of time, so it takes “il y a”. To talk about the time that has passed since, change the verb: “je suis ici depuis”.
With “depuis”, if you still live in Montreal, the verb stays in the present. The passé composé would mean it is over.
