Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions about the tools

Answers to the questions readers ask most often about our free calculators.

Which tool tells me how much I will actually take home?+

The Net salary calculator: it takes federal and Quebec income tax and your QPP, QPIP and EI contributions off your gross salary, and shows your net pay per year, per month and per pay. If the offer is hourly, start with the Hourly ↔ annual wage converter.

What are these tools for?+

To prepare real decisions in Quebec: knowing your net salary before accepting a job offer, checking whether a rent increase is reasonable, estimating daycare costs, building a budget, calculating the welcome tax before buying a home, or counting your residency days before applying for citizenship.

Are they free? Do I need an account?+

Yes, they are all free and work without an account or signup.

Are the results reliable?+

They are estimates based on the published rules and rates; the tax tools use the 2026 rates. Your real result depends on your situation (deductions, credits, special conditions) and may differ. For an important decision, confirm the amount with the agency concerned, such as Revenu Québec or the Canada Revenue Agency.

Where do the numbers come from? Are there sources?+

Most tools have a “Sources and references” section at the bottom of their page that links to the official pages used for the calculation (Government of Quebec, Revenu Québec, Government of Canada, etc.). The currency converter uses exchange rates fetched automatically online; they are indicative only.

What is the difference between tools and templates?+

Tools calculate a number: net salary, taxes, budget, mortgage. Templates are ready-to-adapt texts: Quebec CV, emails, cover letter, phone scripts. See all templates.

Does the calculation take my personal situation into account?+

The tools apply the general rules. The Net salary calculator, for example, only counts the basic personal amount: it does not account for RRSP or pension contributions, union dues, credits for a spouse or children, childcare costs or medical expenses. If any of these apply to you, your real amount will be different.

Are the amounts I type saved?+

The calculation runs in your browser: the amounts are not sent to a server to be calculated. A few tools (net salary, budget, daycare cost, residency days) keep them on this device so you find them again next time. You do not need an account.
