depuis, il y a, pendant, dans
Four little words are used to place things in time: depuis, il y a, pendant, dans.

| depuis | since a point in time, still going on now |
| il y a | X time ago, in the past, action finished |
| pendant | throughout a whole period |
| dans | after a delay, in the future |
“Depuis” goes with the present tense even when the action began long ago.

Common mistakes
Mistakes you will often hear, and the right way to say it.
Je suis arrivé depuis deux mois.Je suis arrivé il y a deux mois. / Je suis ici depuis deux mois.
“Arriver” is a moment, not a stretch of time, so it takes “il y a”. To talk about the time that has passed since, change the verb: “je suis ici depuis”.
J'ai habité à Montréal depuis trois ans.J'habite à Montréal depuis trois ans.
With “depuis”, if you still live in Montreal, the verb stays in the present. The passé composé would mean it is over.
