Au Québec, le passage du « vous » au « tu » se fait souvent vite et de façon explicite : c'est normal qu'une des deux personnes propose « on peut se tutoyer ? » après deux ou trois rencontres, surtout si les âges sont proches. Le « vous » reste de mise envers les personnes nettement plus âgées, dans certains milieux professionnels, ou lors d'un tout premier contact. Une fois la bascule faite, revenir au « vous » serait perçu comme une distance volontaire.
In Quebec, the shift from « vous » to « tu » often happens quickly and explicitly: it's normal for one of the two people to propose « can we use tu? » after two or three meetings, especially if you're close in age. « Vous » stays in place with much older people, in certain professional settings, or at a very first contact. Once the switch has been made, going back to « vous » would be read as deliberate distance.
