The heating that stopped working
One November morning, Nadia's radiator is cold. She has to call the landlord, in French, for the first time.

Nadia habitait dans son appartement depuis deux mois quand le premier vrai froid est arrivé. Un matin de novembre, elle s'est réveillée avec le nez glacé. Elle a touché le radiateur du salon : il était froid comme une pierre. Dehors, le vent soufflait fort et les fenêtres tremblaient un peu.
D'abord, elle a pensé que c'était normal. Dans son pays, on n'allumait jamais le chauffage avant décembre. Mais ici, ses voisins avaient déjà tous leurs radiateurs chauds. Elle a mis un deuxième chandail, puis un troisième. Sa fille, Lina, faisait ses devoirs avec son manteau sur le dos.
« Maman, j'ai froid aux mains », a dit Lina.
Nadia a compris qu'il fallait agir. Elle a cherché le numéro du propriétaire dans ses papiers. Elle hésitait, parce qu'elle ne savait pas comment expliquer le problème en français. Elle a préparé ses phrases sur un papier, puis elle a appelé.
« Bonjour, monsieur Tremblay. C'est Nadia, la locataire du deuxième. Le chauffage ne marche plus depuis ce matin. »
Le propriétaire a été gentil. Il a posé quelques questions : est-ce que le thermostat était allumé ? Est-ce que les autres radiateurs étaient froids aussi ? Nadia a vérifié pendant qu'il attendait au téléphone. Tout était froid.
« Je vais envoyer quelqu'un cet après-midi », a-t-il promis.
Un peu plus tard, un homme avec une boîte à outils a sonné. Il a regardé le thermostat, puis il est descendu au sous-sol. Quand il est revenu, il souriait.
« C'était un petit problème avec le système. C'est réparé. »
Peu à peu, l'appartement est redevenu chaud. Lina a enlevé son manteau. Nadia a préparé du thé à la menthe et elle a regardé la neige tomber par la fenêtre. Elle était fière : elle avait réglé son premier problème d'hiver, en français.

Nadia had been living in her apartment for two months when the first real cold arrived. One November morning, she woke up with an icy nose. She touched the living-room radiator: it was as cold as a stone. Outside, the wind was blowing hard and the windows were rattling a little.
At first, she thought it was normal. In her country, nobody ever turned on the heating before December. But here, all her neighbours already had warm radiators. She put on a second sweater, then a third. Her daughter, Lina, was doing her homework with her coat on.
“Mom, my hands are cold,” Lina said.
Nadia understood that she had to act. She looked for the landlord's number in her papers. She hesitated, because she did not know how to explain the problem in French. She wrote her sentences down on a piece of paper, then she called.
“Hello, Mr. Tremblay. This is Nadia, the tenant on the second floor. The heating has not been working since this morning.”
The landlord was kind. He asked a few questions: was the thermostat turned on? Were the other radiators cold too? Nadia checked while he waited on the phone. Everything was cold.
“I will send someone this afternoon,” he promised.
A little later, a man with a toolbox rang the bell. He looked at the thermostat, then went down to the basement. When he came back, he was smiling.
“It was a small problem with the system. It's fixed.”
Little by little, the apartment became warm again. Lina took off her coat. Nadia made some mint tea and watched the snow fall through the window. She was proud: she had solved her first winter problem, in French.
