Homemade French Toast
A simple three-step recipe that turns stale bread into a golden, crispy snack.
The text

In a bowl, you mix two eggs with half a glass of milk, then you add a packet of vanilla sugar. Mix well with a fork. Once the mixture is smooth, place the slices of stale bread in the bowl and let them rest 2 minutes, until the bread has absorbed the milk.
Meanwhile, heat a pan with a piece of butter. Gently transfer the bread into the pan, which has been preheated. Let it cook over low heat. No high heat — the butter could burn. Keep cooking 3 minutes on each side to get a nicely golden, crispy crust.
On a plate, you put the warm bread and you sprinkle a little sugar on top. There is nothing more delicious than this snack you have just made. This recipe keeps in your notebook forever! Thank you for following these simple steps. I hope you liked it, and don't forget to enjoy it!

Grammar
The language points found in this text.
- 1
The indefinite pronoun 'on': it stands for 'people', 'we', or a general action; the verb takes the third-person singular.
- 2
The infinitive as an instruction: in a recipe the bare infinitive (déposer, laisser, faire, transférer, poursuivre) states each step.
- 3
Time clause: 'lorsque' + present indicative (lorsqu'on obtient) links two actions one after the other.
- 4
'jusqu'à ce que' + subjunctive: marks the point at which an action stops; here the past subjunctive (ait absorbé).
- 5
The causative 'faire' + infinitive: faire chauffer means 'to make hot', 'to heat'.
- 6
The relative pronoun 'qui': in qui a été préchauffée, 'qui' is the subject of the clause.
- 7
Passive in the passé composé and agreement: a été préchauffée — the subject 'la poêle' is feminine singular, so the participle adds an 'e'.
- 8
Present conditional for a possibility: le beurre pourrait brûler — 'pourrait' flags a risk that might happen.
- 9
'pour' + infinitive: pour obtenir — expresses purpose, 'in order to get'.
- 10
Participles used as adjectives: dorée, craquante — agreeing feminine singular with 'la croûte'.
- 11
'il n'y a rien de' + adjective + 'que': il n'y a rien de plus délicieux que… — absolute negation plus a comparative.
- 12
The relative pronoun 'que': ce goûter qu'on vient de préparer — 'qu'' is the direct object.
- 13
Recent past: 'venir de' + infinitive (vient de préparer) — an action just completed.
- 14
Pronominal verb with passive meaning: cette recette se conserve — 'this recipe can be kept'.
- 15
Perfect infinitive: 'merci de' + 'avoir' + past participle (merci d'avoir suivi) — thanking for something already done.
- 16
The verb 'plaire' and its indirect object: ça vous a plu — plaire à quelqu'un; 'vous' is the indirect object pronoun.
- 17
Negative imperative and pronoun placement: n'oubliez pas de vous régaler — 'ne… pas' wraps the conjugated verb, and the reflexive 'vous' sits before the infinitive 'régaler'.
