Chapter II · A2Verbs
11Point · A2
The passé composé with “avoir” and with “être”
To talk about something finished, French uses “avoir” or “être” in the present plus the past participle.
At a glance
| Auxiliary | Used with | Example |
|---|---|---|
| avoir | 大多数动词(收到、搬家、玩…) | J'ai reçu la lettre. |
| avoir | 说明自己的情况 | J'ai déménagé à Laval le mois dernier. |
| être | 移动动词 : aller, arriver, venir, partir | Je suis arrivé à Montréal il y a deux semaines. |
| être | 状态变化动词 : rester | Elle est restée à la maison. |
| être + accord | 分词和主语配合 : allé / allée / allés | On est allés au parc. |
With “être” the past participle agrees with the person: “je suis allé”, “je suis allée”, “on est allés”. With “avoir” it stays unchanged, unless the object comes before the verb.

Note · common mistake
“Aller” takes “être”, not “avoir”. Same for arriver, venir, partir, rester.
With “être” the participle agrees: a woman writes “arrivée”. You cannot hear it, but you can see it in writing.
