The first snowstorm
Linh opens the curtains and discovers her first snowstorm in Sherbrooke. She has to dress warmly, shovel the stairs and catch the bus.

Linh vient du Vietnam et habite à Sherbrooke depuis l'automne. Ce matin, elle ouvre les rideaux et ne reconnaît pas la rue : il y a de la neige partout, sur les autos, les arbres et les escaliers. Il neige encore.
À la radio, on parle d'une tempête, et il faut rester prudent sur les routes. Linh voit son voisin, monsieur Gagnon, qui pellette déjà son entrée. Elle doit aller au travail, alors il faut s'habiller chaudement : un gros chandail, un manteau, une tuque, un foulard et des bottes, car il fait très froid.
Devant la porte, il y a un mur de neige. Monsieur Gagnon lui sourit et demande si c'est sa première tempête. Linh répond que oui, que c'est beau, mais qu'il y a beaucoup de neige. Il lui dit qu'il faut pelleter avant de sortir et lui prête une pelle. Linh pellette : c'est lourd, mais elle rit.
Les enfants du quartier glissent dans la rue, et tout est calme et blanc. L'autobus arrive en retard, mais il arrive. Dans l'autobus, les gens parlent de la neige, et Linh écoute, comprenant un mot ici et là. Ce soir, elle écrit à sa mère pour raconter sa première tempête.

Linh is from Vietnam and has lived in Sherbrooke since the fall. This morning, she opens the curtains and does not recognize the street: there is snow everywhere, on the cars, the trees and the stairs. It is still snowing.
On the radio, they are talking about a storm, and you have to stay careful on the roads. Linh sees her neighbour, Mr. Gagnon, already shoveling his driveway. She has to go to work, so she has to dress warmly: a thick sweater, a coat, a tuque, a scarf and boots, because it is very cold.
In front of the door, there is a wall of snow. Mr. Gagnon smiles at her and asks if it is her first storm. Linh answers that yes, it is beautiful, but that there is a lot of snow. He tells her that she has to shovel before going out and lends her a shovel. Linh shovels: it is heavy, but she laughs.
The neighbourhood children slide down the street, and everything is calm and white. The bus comes late, but it comes. On the bus, people are talking about the snow, and Linh listens, understanding a word here and there. Tonight, she writes to her mother to tell her about her first snowstorm.
