Introducing yourself to strangers at a block party
Bonjour ! Est-ce que c'est ici, la file pour le café ?
Hello! Is this the line for the coffee?
Bonjour !
Hi! Yes, in theory. But at this point it's more of a cluster than a line.
Ha !
Ha! I see. Do you know if it's free, or do you have to pay?
It's offered by the borough, I think. We can use « tu » here — we're at a party. I'm Sylvain.
Enchantée, Sylvain. Moi, c'est Laila.
Nice to meet you, Sylvain. I'm Laila.
Enchanté. Tu restes sur la rue, Laila ?
Nice to meet you. Do you live on the street, Laila?
Yes, just there — in the triplex with the red door. And you?
Three doors down — the duplex with the big porch. Have you been here long?
Trois mois.
Three months. This is actually my first block party. I hardly know anyone.
Eh bien, bienvenue !
Well, welcome! That's exactly what the party is for. Where did you come from, before the street?
From Lebanon originally, but I lived in Toronto for a few years before moving here.
Ah, donc tu connais l'hiver canadien, au moins. Tu vas bien t'adapter à l'hiver montréalais.
Oh, so you know Canadian winter, at least. You'll handle the Montreal winter just fine.
I hope so! People say it's harsher here. Is this corner usually lively?
In summer, yes — lots of people outside. In winter it's quieter. But we have a Facebook group for the street — I can send you the link.
Oh, that would be great, thanks. That way I'll know what's going on.
Give me your number, I'll text you the link later. And come on — I'll introduce you to Diane, who's organizing the party.
Gladly. Thanks, Sylvain, that's kind of you to take the time.
Ça me fait plaisir. Allez, viens, je te présente.
My pleasure. Come on, let me introduce you.

Contexte· Context
It's summer. Your street is closed for a block party organized by the borough: tables, music, a hot-dog stand. You go alone for the first time and strike up a conversation with someone near the coffee table.
Approaching strangers in a community setting, introducing yourself, saying where you're from and where you live, and starting a light conversation.
Note culturelle· Cultural note
Block parties organized by boroughs are a very Quebec way to meet neighbours with no commitment. You show up alone, talk to whoever's at the coffee table, and the informal « tu » almost always sets in right away. Giving your number to join the street's Facebook group is also a classic.
