The Saturday cleanup
Elif knows no one in the neighbourhood. A poster in the park, a rainy morning, a bowl of hot soup, and neighbours who become friends.

Elif habite dans le quartier depuis trois mois. Samedi matin, elle voit une affiche au parc qui annonce une corvée de quartier. Elle ne connaît personne, mais elle y va quand même. Un homme avec un dossard orange l'accueille et se présente : lui, c'est Pierre-Luc, et elle, c'est Elif.
Une dame âgée qui habite en face du parc travaille déjà là-bas : elle, c'est Francine, et pour elle, ce parc est comme un jardin. Elif et Francine ramassent des bouteilles et des papiers près de l'étang. Elif raconte que, chez elle, en Turquie, on nettoie aussi les rues avant les fêtes, et Francine répond que, chez elle aussi, on fait pareil.
Puis il pleut, et Elif n'a pas de manteau. Un jeune homme lui tend un parapluie, car lui, il a son capuchon. À midi, la pluie s'arrête et tout le monde mange de la soupe. Pierre-Luc demande à Elif si elle revient le mois prochain, et elle répond que oui, avec plaisir.
Pierre-Luc répond que, eux, ils sont toujours là ! Francine ajoute qu'Elif peut venir prendre un café chez elle un jour. Elif rentre mouillée, mais contente : maintenant, elle connaît des gens du quartier, et eux, ils connaissent Elif.

Elif has lived in the neighbourhood for three months. On Saturday morning, she sees a poster in the park announcing a neighbourhood cleanup. She does not know anyone, but she goes anyway. A man in an orange vest welcomes her and introduces himself: he is Pierre-Luc, and she is Elif.
An elderly lady who lives across from the park is already working there: she is Francine, and to her, this park is like a garden. Elif and Francine pick up bottles and litter near the pond. Elif says that back home in Turkey, they also clean the streets before the holidays, and Francine answers that it is the same at her place.
Then it rains, and Elif has no coat. A young man hands her an umbrella, because he has his hood. At noon, the rain stops and everyone eats soup. Pierre-Luc asks Elif if she is coming back next month, and she answers yes, gladly.
Pierre-Luc answers that they are always there! Francine adds that Elif can come for a coffee at her place one day. Elif goes home wet, but happy: now she knows people in the neighbourhood, and they know Elif.
