The coat drive
Joaquín remembers his first winter without a warm coat. This year he joins the neighbourhood committee to organize a drive… and the morning gets off to a bad start.

Joaquín est arrivé au Québec l'hiver dernier. Il se souvient de son premier hiver : un manteau trop mince, des mains gelées, une voisine qui lui avait prêté une tuque. Cette année, il veut rendre la pareille, alors il s'est inscrit au comité de quartier. À la première réunion, Renée, la coordonnatrice, a présenté le projet et a dit qu'il fallait qu'on trouve des manteaux chauds pour les nouvelles familles avant que le froid arrive.
Elle a demandé qui voulait s'en occuper, et Joaquín a levé la main. Renée a précisé qu'il fallait qu'il fasse des affiches, et qu'il fallait aussi que quelqu'un aille chercher les dons chez les gens qui n'ont pas d'auto. Joaquín a répondu qu'il pouvait faire les deux, mais qu'il voulait que ce soit simple pour les gens. Ils ont décidé de mettre une boîte à l'épicerie et une autre à la bibliothèque, et de ramasser tout le samedi.
Pendant deux semaines, il a collé des affiches partout. Le samedi de la collecte, il est arrivé tôt, mais à la fin de la matinée, il y avait seulement quatre manteaux dans la boîte. Joaquín était découragé. Renée l'a rassuré : c'est normal, il faut que les gens aient le temps de vider leurs placards, alors on patiente.
Vers midi, une auto s'est arrêtée. Une voisine est entrée avec trois sacs : elle avait fait le tour de son immeuble, et il fallait qu'on l'aide à tout monter. En une heure, le local était plein : manteaux, bottes, mitaines, foulards. On a tout trié par taille, pour que chaque famille trouve vite ce qu'il lui faut.
La semaine suivante, les familles sont venues. Un petit garçon a enfilé un manteau bleu, trop grand, et sa mère lui a dit qu'il faudrait qu'il le garde pour l'année prochaine aussi. Le garçon, très sérieux, a répondu que le manteau est chaud. Joaquín a pensé à sa voisine et à la tuque. Le soir, il a écrit à Renée pour la remercier et lui demander si on refait le projet l'année prochaine. Elle a répondu que bien sûr, on y pense déjà.

This year, he wants to return the favour, so he joined the neighbourhood committee. At the first meeting, Renée, the coordinator, presented the project and said that they needed to find warm coats for the new families before the cold arrived.
She asked who wanted to take it on, and Joaquín raised his hand. Renée explained that he needed to make posters, and that someone also needed to go and pick up donations from people who do not have a car. Joaquín answered that he could do both, but that he wanted it to be simple for people. They decided to put a box at the grocery store and another one at the library, and to collect everything on Saturday.
For two weeks, he stuck up posters everywhere. On the Saturday of the drive, he arrived early, but by the end of the morning there were only four coats in the box. Joaquín was discouraged. Renée reassured him: it is normal, people need time to empty their closets, so we wait.
Around noon, a car stopped. A neighbour came in with three bags: she had gone around her whole building, and she needed help carrying it all up. Within an hour, the room was full: coats, boots, mittens, scarves. Everything was sorted by size, so that each family could quickly find what it needed.
The following week, the families came. A little boy put on a blue coat that was too big, and his mother told him he would have to keep it for next year too. The boy, very seriously, answered that the coat is warm. Joaquín thought about his neighbour and the tuque. That evening, he wrote to Renée to thank her and ask whether they do the project again next year. She answered that of course, they are already thinking about it.
