For a real condition, the “si” part stays in the present.

Never a future right after “si” itself: the future goes in the other half of the sentence. Before “il”, “si” becomes “s’il”.

Common mistakes

  • Si vous aurez le temps, appelez-nous.Si vous avez le temps, appelez-nous.

    Even when the condition is about the future, the verb after “si” stays in the present. The future goes in the other half of the sentence, not after “si”.

  • Si il pleut, on reste ici.S'il pleut, on reste ici.

    “Si” + “il” always contracts to “s’il”. It is the only case: “si elle”, “si on” do not change.
