Many everyday verbs carry a small pronoun that changes with the subject.

The pronoun is part of the verb: without it the sentence is incomplete or means something else.

Common mistakes
Je lève à sept heures.Je me lève à sept heures.
Without “me”, “lever” means to lift something. To talk about getting out of bed, the pronoun is required.
Je m'appelle est Sofia.Je m'appelle Sofia.
“S’appeler” already is the verb: do not add “est”. The name comes straight after “je m’appelle”.
