Culture note

Registering a vehicle bought outside Quebec takes more steps: often a mechanical inspection at an authorized agent, and payment of applicable taxes (usually based on the recognized value, not a fixed amount). From a dealer, taxes and inspection are often already handled; from a private seller, it's all on you. Don't delay: driving for long on another province's plate isn't allowed once you're a resident.
