Inviting an acquaintance to do an activity together

Situation

Coming out of a French class, you run into someone you've hit it off with during the breaks. You decide to suggest doing something together outside of class.

    Saturday morning would be tight. I have something with my sister. But Sunday morning would suit me better.

Vocabulary

  • la fin de semainethe weekend— Standard Québécois usage — « le week-end » is heard but less common in everyday speech.
  • en avant-midiin the morning (before noon)— Québécois alternative to « le matin »; often used to mean roughly 9 a.m. to noon.
  • ça serait serréit would be tight (schedule-wise)

  • se retrouverto meet up— « On se retrouve à dix heures » = let's meet at ten.

  • hâte à çalooking forward to it— Short for « j'ai hâte à ça » — very common in Quebec.

Culture note

In Quebec, suggesting an activity to a mere acquaintance isn't strange — you don't need to already be friends. A walk on Mount Royal, brunch, an exhibit: these are « light » invitations that don't commit anyone and are the normal way to turn an acquaintance into a friend.
