Planning your retirement

Situation

You discuss retirement with a colleague who has been preparing for years.

The roles

AThe colleagueBYou
  • The colleague
    Listen

Tu penses à la retraite, toi ?

    Do you think about retirement?

  • You
    Listen

A bit, but I don't know where to start.

  • The colleague
    Listen

La première étape: connaître les régimes publics. La RRQ et la SV au fédéral.

First step: know the public plans. The QPP and the federal OAS.

  • You
    Listen

    C'est quoi, la RRQ ?

    What is the QPP?

  • The colleague
    Listen

The Quebec Pension Plan. You contribute while working, and receive a pension at retirement.

  • You
    Listen

    Et la SV ?

    And the OAS?

  • The colleague
    Listen

Old Age Security, a monthly amount from the federal government, based on years of residence.

  • You
    Listen

Est-ce que ça suffit pour vivre ?

Is that enough to live on?

  • The colleague
    Listen

Not really. That's why the RRSP and TFSA are important to supplement.

  • You
    Listen

Quelle est la différence entre les deux ?

What's the difference between the two?

  • The colleague
    Listen

The RRSP reduces tax now, but you pay tax on withdrawal. The TFSA is the opposite: no tax on withdrawal.

  • You
    Listen

Et le régime de mon employeur ?

    And my employer's plan?

  • The colleague
    Listen

Many employers offer a plan with matching contributions. That's free money, don't miss it.

  • You
    Listen

I'll check my plan this week.

  • The colleague
    Listen

Good idea. The earlier you start, the more compound interest works for you.
