Ordering wine or asking for a pairing

Situation

You have chosen your dish and would like a wine that goes well with it. This dialogue shows how to ask the server for a food-and-wine pairing.

The roles

  • You
    Listen

J'ai commandé le bœuf braisé. Quel vin me conseilleriez-vous pour l'accompagner ?

I ordered the braised beef. What wine would you recommend to go with it?

  • The server
    Listen

A full-bodied red would be ideal. We have a good selection by the glass and by the bottle.

  • You
    Listen

There are two of us. Do you think a bottle would be a better choice?

  • The server
    Listen

If you both drink red, a bottle is often better value.

D'accord.

All right. Would you have a bottle to suggest in a reasonable price range?

  • The server

I recommend this valley wine: it pairs very well with the beef.

  • You

Parfait, nous allons prendre cette bouteille. Merci pour le conseil.

Perfect, we'll take that bottle. Thank you for the advice.

Culture note

Many restaurants in Quebec offer wines "by the glass", which lets you try one without ordering a full bottle. The server can often suggest a good pairing with your dish.
