The fall campaign is coming. Every fall, Quebec launches a vaccination campaign against respiratory viruses — mainly the flu (influenza) and COVID-19 — ahead of the season when they spread most. Appointments for the general public usually open in early October; the exact date for this year is announced on Quebec.ca's Seasonal respiratory virus vaccination page.

The flu shot: free for everyone. The flu vaccine is offered free of charge to everyone aged 6 months and older who asks for it, according to Quebec.ca. It is especially recommended for people at higher risk of complications: those 65 and over, people with a chronic illness, pregnant women, and young children.

COVID-19: free only for certain groups. The COVID-19 vaccine is offered free only to more vulnerable people or those at risk of complications — for example those 65 and over, immunocompromised people, pregnant women, people with a chronic illness, and health-care workers, according to Quebec.ca. Others can still get the vaccine, but it is not free for them.

Two vaccines, one visit. If you are eligible for both, you can get the flu vaccine and the COVID-19 vaccine at the same appointment. Receiving more than one vaccine at the same time is recognized as safe.

Where to get vaccinated. Vaccination takes place at a community pharmacy, a CLSC, or a local point of service (PSL). Many people choose their neighbourhood pharmacy, often the easiest to reach. The vaccine itself is free when you are eligible, but a pharmacy may charge an administration fee: ask when you book.

How to book. You reserve your spot on the Clic Santé platform by choosing the flu or COVID-19 vaccination service, or by phone at 1-877-644-4545 (Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.). It is the same system used for many other health appointments in Quebec — learning to use it will serve you often.

Good to know for newcomers. This vaccine is one of the easiest health services to get after you arrive: no family doctor required, an online appointment, and free for the flu. An unpaid bill does not go away if you ignore it. If you cannot pay your electricity account, the worst thing to do is nothing. The good news: you have options, and in winter, an important protection. The reflex to have is simple — contact Hydro-Québec before the due date, not after a notice. In winter, electricity is not cut off for non-payment. This is a protection many people don't know about: between December 1 and March 31, Hydro-Québec does not interrupt service for non-payment in a primary residence heated by electricity, per its Conditions of Service. If your service had already been cut, it is restored on December 1. So you will not spend the winter without heat because of a bill. Careful: the debt is still owed. This protection prevents a winter cut-off, but it does not erase what you owe, and interruptions can resume in early April. Fake calls from 'the tax agency' or 'immigration': how to spot the scam and not pay

The Canada Revenue Agency and IRCC will never ask you to pay by gift card or cryptocurrency, or for your banking details by text. A call that threatens you and demands immediate payment is a scam — hang up.

How real agencies behave — and scammers don't. Fraudsters impersonate the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), IRCC, or other public services to get money or information out of you. Two simple markers: the CRA will never ask for personal or banking information by text or email, and will never demand payment by Interac e-transfer, cryptocurrency, or gift card, according to the CRA. For its part, IRCC will not phone you to demand a payment or threaten you with removal. Why newcomers are targeted. These scams often target people who arrived recently: you are less familiar with how the agencies work, you worry about your immigration status, and a language barrier makes the trap harder to spot. Online passport scam: charges laid against fake passport services

The Competition Bureau has laid criminal charges against websites that posed as official Government of Canada passport services.

Charges laid. On July 28, 2026, the Competition Bureau of Canada announced that multiple criminal charges had been laid against two Ontario individuals, John Jesse Breslin and Phoebe Hui Ting Wong, as reported in the Bureau's news release. They operated a business under the names Passport Online and Passport Express. How the scam worked. The pair used a website and online advertisements that led customers to believe they were dealing directly with the Government of Canada to obtain or renew their passports quickly. That was not the case. The charges relate to misleading marketing, fraud over $5,000 and possession of proceeds of crime, for alleged offences between 2016 and 2020. Charges, not convictions. The Bureau notes that these individuals are presumed innocent until a court decides otherwise. Online passport renewal: now open to all eligible adults

Since July 28, eligible adults can renew their Canadian passport online, with no cap on the number of applications.

A broader service. On July 28, 2026, the federal government announced that online passport renewal is now available to all eligible adult Canadians. The cap on how many people can renew their passport online has been removed, as explained in the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada news release. Welcome tax 2027: the bracket thresholds are going up

For 2027, the amounts used to set the welcome tax brackets rise to $64,400 and $322,600.

An annual adjustment. On July 31, 2026, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing published the amounts used to set the brackets of the property transfer duty tax base for the 2027 municipal fiscal year, as stated in the official announcement. This Quebec news page is available in French only. What is the welcome tax? The "welcome tax" is the common name for the property transfer duty: a municipal tax paid once by the buyer when purchasing a property in Quebec. Its amount is calculated in brackets on the purchase price, with a higher rate as the price increases. The new thresholds. For 2027, the amounts for the first two thresholds rise from $62,900 to $64,400 and from $315,000 to $322,600 respectively. The indexation rate, published in the Gazette officielle, is 2.4173%.
