1. The reality of healthcare without a family doctor
One of the first surprises for newcomers in Quebec is how hard it is to find a family doctor. The shortage is real — over a million Quebecers don't have one. If you've just arrived, you can't simply call a clinic and register. You must sign up on the Guichet d'accès à la première ligne (previously the Guichet d'accès aux médecins de famille) and wait to be matched with an available doctor. In the meantime, walk-in clinics and CLSCs are your gateway into the Quebec healthcare system.
2. Walk-in clinic: for everyday medical care
A walk-in clinic, as its name suggests, takes you without an appointment. You show up in the morning at opening, take a number or register on the Bonjour-santé app, and wait your turn. Walk-in clinics treat common health problems — infections, minor injuries, prescription renewals, simple health check-ups. They do not replace emergency rooms for serious situations. Consultations are covered by the RAMQ for permanent residents and citizens. Asylum seekers and work or study permit holders should check their coverage.
3. The CLSC: the community health centre
The CLSC (Centre local de services communautaires) is more comprehensive than a walk-in clinic. It offers medical, nursing, psychological and social services under one roof. Every neighbourhood and region in Quebec has a CLSC. Services include medical consultations, home nursing care for elderly or ill people, mental health services, family support, vaccination services, and assistance for vulnerable people. For newcomers, the CLSC is often the place to go for vaccinations, pregnancy monitoring, preventive check-ups and access to social services. Basic services are covered by the RAMQ.

To find a walk-in clinic or CLSC near you: clicsante.ca. To register for a family doctor: santeplus.quebec. For health advice without going to a clinic: call 811 to speak with a nurse 24 hours a day (Info-Santé).
Author's Note: 811 is your best friend for health questions in Quebec. A nurse answers in under 15 minutes, in French or English, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They can tell you whether your problem requires a clinic visit, an ER trip, or whether an over-the-counter medication will do. It's often the first reflex to have before deciding what to do.
