A night at the emergency room
Nadia's son has a fever in the middle of the night. Alone, in French, she gets through the waiting room, the questions, the wait, and leaves with a small folded note.

Il était tard. Dehors, la neige tombait doucement sur la rue vide. Dans l'appartement, Yacine, le fils de Nadia, toussait depuis le souper et sa peau était brûlante. Nadia a posé la main sur son front, puis elle a hésité. Elle ne connaissait personne à appeler à cette heure. Alors elle a habillé Yacine chaudement, elle a mis la carte d'assurance maladie dans sa poche et elle a appelé un taxi.
À l'urgence, la salle d'attente était presque pleine. Il y avait un vieil homme qui dormait la bouche ouverte, une jeune femme qui tenait son bras, une famille qui parlait à voix basse. Nadia s'est présentée au comptoir.
« Bonsoir. Mon fils a beaucoup de fièvre. »
L'employée lui a posé des questions : le nom de l'enfant, depuis quand il était malade, ce qu'il avait mangé. Nadia a compris presque tout. Quand elle n'a pas compris, elle a dit simplement : « Pouvez-vous répéter, s'il vous plaît ? » Personne ne s'est impatienté.
Ensuite, elles ont attendu. Yacine s'est endormi sur ses genoux. Nadia regardait l'horloge et pensait à sa mère, qui était loin, et à tout ce qu'elle aurait dit. Elle se sentait petite dans cette grande salle.
Enfin, une infirmière l'a appelée. Elle a examiné Yacine avec douceur, elle a posé d'autres questions, puis elle a expliqué ce qu'il fallait faire à la maison. Mais elle parlait vite, et Nadia a eu peur d'oublier.
« Est-ce que vous pouvez l'écrire, s'il vous plaît ? Mon français est encore petit. »
L'infirmière a souri. Elle a pris un papier et elle a tout écrit, lentement, avec des mots simples.
Quand elles sont sorties, le ciel devenait gris. Yacine allait déjà un peu mieux. Dans le taxi du retour, il a regardé la neige et il a demandé s'il pouvait rester à la maison aujourd'hui. Nadia a ri pour la première fois de la nuit.
Elle a gardé le papier plié dans son portefeuille pendant longtemps. C'était le souvenir de la nuit où elle a réussi, seule, en français.

It was late. Outside, snow was falling softly on the empty street. In the apartment, Yacine, Nadia's son, had been coughing since supper and his skin was burning hot. Nadia put her hand on his forehead, then hesitated. She knew no one she could call at that hour. So she dressed Yacine warmly, put the health insurance card in her pocket and called a taxi.
At the emergency room, the waiting room was almost full. There was an old man sleeping with his mouth open, a young woman holding her arm, a family talking in low voices. Nadia went up to the counter.
“Good evening. My son has a high fever.”
The employee asked her questions: the child's name, how long he had been sick, what he had eaten. Nadia understood almost everything. When she did not understand, she simply said: “Could you repeat that, please?” Nobody got impatient.
Then they waited. Yacine fell asleep on her lap. Nadia watched the clock and thought about her mother, who was far away, and about everything she would have said. She felt small in that big room.
At last, a nurse called her. She examined Yacine gently, asked more questions, then explained what to do at home. But she spoke quickly, and Nadia was afraid of forgetting.
“Could you write it down, please? My French is still small.”
The nurse smiled. She took a piece of paper and wrote everything down, slowly, in simple words.
When they came out, the sky was turning grey. Yacine was already feeling a little better. In the taxi home, he watched the snow and asked if he could stay home today. Nadia laughed for the first time that night.
She kept the folded note in her wallet for a long time. It was the memory of the night she managed, alone, in French.
