Exchanging your driver's licence at the SAAQ

Situation

You've driven for years in your home country and want a Quebec licence. You go to the SAAQ; the agent checks the agreement with your country.

Culture note

The SAAQ has agreements with several countries (France, Belgium, Switzerland, etc.) that allow exchanging a licence without a test; without an agreement, you must take the tests. A licence that's neither in French nor English must come with a translation. Do it early: a foreign licence is only valid for a limited period after arrival.
