A potluck dinner among neighbours

Situation

A few neighbours in the building are organizing a potluck dinner. You run into one of the organizers in the hallway to coordinate, then you show up that evening, dish in hand.

Vocabulary

  • un souper « apportez votre plat »a potluck dinner— The Québécois way to say potluck — each guest brings one dish to share.
  • un plat principala main dish— As opposed to une entrée (starter) or un dessert.
  • tenir compte deto take into account— Polite phrasing for asking about allergies, diets, etc.
  • végétarien·nevegetarian— Common enough that hosts usually plan one option without meat.
  • débarré·eunlocked— A Québécois word — most of France would say « déverrouillée ».

Culture note

In Quebec, the « bring-your-own-dish » dinner is very common, especially among neighbours, colleagues or friends who want to share the cost and the cooking. It's also a nice chance to share a dish from your home country — hosts almost always appreciate something personal rather than a store-bought dish.
