What is happening. A legal strike by the Syndicat des professionnelles et professionnels municipaux de Montréal (SPPMM) has been under way since October 19, 2026. According to the City of Montreal, it runs from Monday to Thursday, 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. the next day, and from Friday at 5 p.m. until Monday at 8 a.m. Essential services related to public health and safety are being maintained.
Libraries. Hours vary by borough. In Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, the four libraries open on weekdays until 5 p.m. On weekends, they open only for a few hours to pick up reserved documents: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for Langelier, Maisonneuve and Mercier, and Sunday only for Hochelaga, according to the borough's page (in French). In Le Sud-Ouest, on Sunday, November 1, the Marie-Uguay library is open from noon to 5 p.m., Réjean-Ducharme from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with reduced services, and Saint-Henri and Saint-Charles are closed, according to the borough's update (in French).
Maisons de la culture. In Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, regular hours are being kept, but shows may be cancelled. The borough asks people to check each maison de la culture's Facebook page before going. Exhibition visits are still taking place on weekends.
How to check. The City publishes the list of impacts by borough (in French). For a question or a complaint, call 311. Hours can change without notice.
Good to know for newcomers. If you were planning to borrow books or see a show this weekend, check your library's or maison de la culture's schedule before you leave. Reserved documents can be picked up during the posted hours. To find a library near you, see our guide to libraries in Quebec and our list of free activities in Montreal.
