A new protection as of October 5, 2026. From that date, a legal warranty of good working order automatically applies to several new household appliances and electronic devices bought or leased in Quebec. If the item breaks down during the set period, you are entitled to free repair or replacement, according to the Office de la protection du consommateur. There is nothing to buy: this warranty is provided by law.
How long are you covered? The length depends on the item: 6 years for a stove, refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner or heat pump; 5 years for a washer, dryer or dishwasher; 4 years for a television; and 3 years for a laptop or desktop computer, a video game console, a cell phone or a tablet. The period counts from the purchase.
What the warranty covers. It includes the parts and labour needed for the repair, as well as reasonable shipping costs for the item. It is independent of other warranties and "follows" the item if it is resold or given away. If there is a problem, you can turn to the merchant or the manufacturer.
The price will show the duration. As of October 5, 2026, the merchant must clearly show the length of the good-working-order warranty near the price of a covered item, and the manufacturer must publish it online. In practice, you will see how many years a product is guaranteed before you even buy it — a useful way to compare two models.
Good to know for newcomers. When you furnish your home, keep your proof of purchase: it is what activates the warranty. And before paying for an "extended warranty" offered in store, check the length of the legal warranty already included — you may already be protected without paying a cent more.
