How to find parent groups, family clubs and support networks for immigrant families in Montréal — Maisons de la Famille, Facebook groups, CLSCs and community organizations.

Des centaines de groupes de parents animent les quartiers de Montréal.

1. Breaking isolation: why parent groups are essential

Arriving in Quebec with young children is one of the most isolating situations for immigrant families. The family support network — grandparents, cousins, old friends — stayed in the home country. Days with a baby or young child can be long and exhausting without this natural social fabric.

Parent groups and family meetings are often the first space where immigrant parents build a local network — not just for the children, but for themselves.

These spaces also have a real linguistic advantage: group discussions with other francophone parents are one of the best informal practices of everyday French.

2. Maisons de la Famille and Family Resource Centres

Maisons de la Famille are community organizations subsidized by the Quebec government with a mission to support families with young children — particularly families in vulnerable or isolated situations, which often includes immigrant families. They exist in every Montréal neighbourhood.

What they offer: - Parent-child workshops - Play groups for ages 0–5 - Early stimulation workshops - Parent meetings - Drop-in childcare (haltes-garderies) - Family cooking classes - Sometimes French or literacy courses

Activities are generally free or very low cost — a few dollars symbolic contribution at most.

3. Facebook groups and online communities

Facebook groups have become one of the most effective tools for immigrant families in Montréal to find their community. There are dozens of active groups organized by nationality, neighbourhood, life stage, or interests.

Common active group types: - Nationality groups: French, Belgian, Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, Lebanese, Brazilian, Mexican, Colombian, Chinese families in Montréal (and many more) - Neighbourhood parent groups: Plateau, Rosemont, Verdun, NDG, Côte-des-Neiges moms/dads - Breastfeeding and maternity groups in Quebec - Baby equipment buy/sell/give groups - CPE, schools, children's activities discussion groups

Quick start: search Facebook for your nationality + Montréal, or your neighbourhood + Montréal + parents/famille.

4. Community organizations and immigrant welcome centres

Beyond Maisons de la Famille, several community organizations in Montréal specifically offer welcome and integration services for immigrant families — including help with administrative tasks, French learning, and organizing social activities and family groups.

Major Montréal organizations: - CARI Saint-Laurent (North Montréal families) - CIADI (Côte-des-Neiges) - Action Réfugiés Montréal - PROMIS - Carrefour d'intégration - Many others organized by borough or cultural community

These organizations know the social fabric of your neighbourhood and can quickly orient you to the right groups, resources and people. A visit to your neighbourhood's community organization early on arrival is often the most efficient shortcut to starting to build a local network.

Author's Note: the first weeks in Quebec with a young child can be among the hardest of your life — not because of the country, but because of the absence of your natural network. What I've seen is that the families who fare best are those who took active steps in the first week: a Maison de la Famille, a Facebook group, a conversation with a neighbour. Isolation doesn't resolve itself. But it resolves quickly once you take that first step.
