An extension announced. On July 31, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced an extension of the temporary measures for Palestinians, which were set to end on July 31, 2026. This is a federal measure, so it applies across Canada, including Quebec. The details are in IRCC's official notice.
What is extended. The measures have two components, both ending December 30, 2027. First, people in Canada who received an open work permit under the earlier measures may now apply to extend it (standard fees apply). Visitor or study permit extensions go through IRCC's usual channels.
For those arriving. Eligible Palestinians who arrive in Canada on or before September 30, 2027 and did not apply under the earlier measures may apply from within Canada for fee-exempt study permits, open work permits, temporary resident permits or temporary resident status extensions.
Who is affected. As of May 31, 2026, there were 2,383 valid work permits and 236 valid study permits issued to Palestinian passport holders in Canada. Canada continues to provide temporary financial assistance, interim federal health coverage and settlement services to displaced Palestinians.
Good to know for newcomers: if you are Palestinian in Canada, or if family members want to join you, these extensions give more time to regularize your status or bring your loved ones over. Applications are submitted online on IRCC's official website; fees are waived for eligible applicants under the second component.
