1. The school system in Gatineau

In Gatineau, several School Service Centres run the French public schools:

  • CSS des Draveurs (Gatineau and Hull-east sectors)
  • CSS des Portages-de-l'Outaouais (Hull-west and Aylmer)
  • CSS au Cœur-des-Vallées (Buckingham and Masson-Angers)

The Western Quebec School Board runs the English public schools.

2. Who can attend English school

The Charter of the French Language — Bill 101 — restricts access to English public school.

Gatineau particularity: the historic English-speaking community is larger than elsewhere in Quebec, and several families meet the criteria of the Western Quebec School Board.

3. The welcome class

If your child does not yet speak French, they will be placed in a welcome class at a French school. It's an intensive program lasting from 10 months to two years. The program is free.

4. Gatineau's three French CSS at a glance

Gatineau is unique in Quebec: three French CSS share the city, a consequence of the 2002 merger of five former municipalities. The table summarizes which CSS serves which sector.

Before signing a lease, check on the appropriate CSS site which school is attached to your address. Each CSS has its own address-search tool.

For families eligible under Bill 101, the Western Quebec School Board offers a network of English public schools across the territory. The school transport between sectors is generally organized but can lengthen the day.

5. Required documents

  • Birth certificate of the child
  • Proof of residence in Gatineau
  • Quebec Selection Certificate (CSQ) or other immigration document
  • Vaccination record
  • School report card from the previous year
  • Copy of passports

6. Steps to register your child

Here are the steps to follow.

  • Find the CSS that serves your neighbourhood (Draveurs, Portages, or Cœur-des-Vallées)
  • Gather all the documents listed in section 5
  • Book an appointment with the CSS registration office
  • For children who don't speak French: take the language evaluation
  • Confirm the registration and receive the schedule
  • Register your child for school-based daycare if needed

7. The place of English in French schools

More than elsewhere in Quebec, Gatineau's French schools integrate a real exposure to English. The Ministry of Education mandates an English-as-a-second-language program starting in Grade 1, and several schools in Hull and Aylmer offer intensive or enriched programs.

Mastery of both languages is a real asset in the region. Ask the target school about the intensity of its English program before registering.

8. Frequently asked questions

The most common questions from new parents in Gatineau: how to know which CSS serves my address, can we enroll our child in Ottawa, is the welcome class paid, and when to register for September.

How do I know which CSS serves my Gatineau address?

General rule:

  • Hull-east and Gatineau-central: CSS des Draveurs
  • Hull-west and Aylmer: CSS des Portages-de-l'Outaouais
  • Buckingham and Masson-Angers: CSS au Cœur-des-Vallées

The boundaries can split a single neighbourhood — always verify on the appropriate CSS site (address-search tool). An address belongs to a single CSS; there's no choice. The Western Quebec School Board covers the whole city for eligible families.

Can we enroll our child in an Ottawa school if we live in Gatineau?

In the vast majority of cases, no. Gatineau and Ottawa are in two different provinces with two separate school systems. Ontario public schools are funded by Ontario property taxes and serve Ontario residents.

Cross-border enrollment exists in very limited situations — typically when both parents work in Ontario — and even then, fees of several thousand dollars apply. For 99% of families, school happens on the Quebec side.

Is the welcome class paid?

No. The welcome class is entirely free, like the regular class. The only costs that may apply are the same as in any public school:

  • School supplies: $50 to $150/year depending on level
  • Optional school outings
  • School-based daycare: ~$9/day if used

The teacher is a certified specialist by the Ministry for teaching a second language.

When do we need to register for the September start?

The main registration window for September runs in February-March of the same year. Each CSS publishes exact dates on its site in late January.

If you arrive after that window, you can still register — neighbourhood-school spots may be limited and a temporary transfer to another school in the sector may apply. The earlier you contact the appropriate CSS, the smoother the placement. The language evaluation usually happens within 2 to 3 weeks of registration.
