1. Quebec's public transit landscape
Quebec has a well-developed public transit network in its major cities, but very limited coverage in rural areas. Each region has its own transit agency: STM in Montréal, RTC in Québec City, RTL in Longueuil, STL on Montréal's north shore, and the exo network for distant suburbs and commuter trains. For travel between cities, Flixbus, Orléans Express and Via Rail serve the main routes. If you live outside an urban centre, a car is often essential — intercity bus service is limited.
2. Montréal: metro, bus and exo network
The STM network in Montréal has 4 metro lines and about 200 bus routes. The metro runs roughly from 5:30 am to midnight on weekdays, and until 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays.
The OPUS card is the common transit card for all regional fare products: load it with a monthly pass, day passes or ticket booklets. A monthly STM pass costs around $100 for adults, with reduced rates for students, seniors and low-income riders.
The exo network completes coverage with 5 commuter rail lines and multiple bus networks for the north and south shores. The REM (Réseau express métropolitain), a new automated light-rail network inaugurated in 2023, now links the South Shore, the airport and the North Shore.
3. Getting an OPUS card and loading fares
The OPUS card is available at all Montréal metro stations, at authorized points of sale — newsstands, convenience stores — and online at the STM website. The blank card costs $6. Once you have the card, load a monthly pass at metro station ticket machines or online by creating an STM account.
The monthly pass renews at the start of each month — remember to reload before the end of the current month to avoid being locked out.
The Transit app is the most widely used app in Montréal for trip planning — it combines metro, bus, REM and Bixi in real time.

Author's Note: the first time you take the Montréal metro without an OPUS card, you pay a single fare — about $3.75. That's fine while you get your card, but the monthly pass breaks even at just 28 trips per month. If you take the metro daily to work, the monthly pass is the best option from your very first week.
