Winter Date Ideas in Montreal: 6 Places for Two

Winter isn't the season for staying in that people imagine: in Montreal, it's actually when the city lights up the most. Here are six ideas for an evening or a day for two, from a free rink to a Nordic spa, in the order they appear on the calendar.

1

Montreal's Great Christmas Market

★★★★★CouplesBudgetHolidays
Date

November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027; until December 20, open Wednesday to Friday from 3 pm to 10 pm, Saturday from 11 am to 10 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 8 pm (closed Monday and Tuesday), per the official schedule.

Cost

Free admission, per the Market's FAQ; you only pay for what you buy at the chalets.

Tickets
  • No ticket needed — free access.
Address

Place des Festivals, 1499 Jeanne-Mance Street, Montréal, QC H2X 2J4.

Chalets, mulled wine and shows. On the Place des Festivals, in the heart of the Quartier des spectacles, Montreal's Great Christmas Market runs from November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027. You can wander among 40 chalets of local and regional artisans, with more than 150 free activities, a signature show, “Noël à Montréal”, and the smell of mulled wine. For a romantic, free evening, a few steps from the Esplanade Tranquille rink.

Downtown Montreal's big Christmas market. Quebec crafts and holiday treats, outdoors.

A stroll through the Christmas market with a cup of mulled wine in hand is one of the city's December rituals.

Getting there

Place-des-Arts or Saint-Laurent métro.

2

The Esplanade Tranquille rink

★★★★★CouplesBudgetEvenings
Date

November 19, 2026 to April 4, 2027, dates still to be confirmed, per the Bonjour Québec listing.

Cost

Free access; skate rental has a fee.

Tickets
  • No ticket needed — skate rental on site.
Address

Corner of Sainte-Catherine Street West and Clark Street, Montréal, QC H2X 3P4.

Skating under the downtown lights. At the corner of Sainte-Catherine Street West and Clark Street, the Esplanade Tranquille rink is described by Bonjour Québec as Montreal's largest refrigerated rink, and access is free. A pavilion lets you warm up by the fireplace, and in the evening the interactive “LUMINO” experience brings the ice to life. For a free date that looks like a winter postcard.

A large refrigerated rink in the middle of the Quartier des spectacles. Evening skating surrounded by the neighbourhood's projections and lights.

The rink is right next to the Place des Festivals: the Christmas market and skating fit into the same evening.

Getting there

Saint-Laurent or Place-des-Arts métro.

3

AURA at Notre-Dame Basilica

★★★★☆CouplesCultureEvenings
Date

In the evening, year-round; the schedule varies by season and is listed in the ticketing on the basilica's website.

Cost

Paid ticket, prices in the online ticketing.

Tickets
  • In the evening, tickets are sold only online or by phone — book before you go.
Address

110 Notre-Dame Street West, Montréal, QC H2Y 1T1.

A light show under the vault. In the evening, Notre-Dame Basilica presents the AURA experience, created by Moment Factory: a show of light and music projected onto the walls, the vault and the altarpiece. You first walk through illuminated stations for 15 to 25 minutes, then the show runs 25 minutes, for a 40 to 45-minute visit in all. For a spectacular outing that lasts under an hour, ideal before dinner in Old Montreal.

A neo-Gothic basilica in the heart of Old Montreal. An immersive show in a heritage site; note that it includes loud music, flashing lights and lasers.

AURA offers a night-time way to discover the basilica, different from the daytime visit.

4

The Museum of Fine Arts on Wednesday night

★★★★☆CouplesCultureSmall budgets
Date

Wednesday evenings, 5 pm to 9 pm; the Chiharu Shiota exhibition runs until February 14, 2027.

For an inexpensive cultural evening, indoors, right downtown.

Montreal's largest art museum. The immersive installations of red, black or white thread by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota, seen in the evening.

The exhibition closes on Valentine's Day — a ready-made date.

Getting there

Peel or Guy-Concordia métro.

5

Strøm Nordic Spa Nuns' Island

★★★★★CouplesRelaxationSpecial occasions

Hot and cold, by the lake. A few minutes from downtown, the Strøm Nordic Spa on Nuns' Island sits on the quay of Lac des Battures: outdoor whirlpools, hot and cold baths, Finnish saunas, a eucalyptus steam bath and Nordic waterfalls, open summer and winter alike. Its relaxation areas with a fireplace make it a spot for special occasions. For a full day of relaxation without leaving Montreal.

The first location of the Strøm chain. Outdoor thermotherapy, between the snow and the hot water.

Alternating hot, cold and rest is a very popular winter ritual in Quebec.

6

MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE

★★★★☆CouplesFestivalsLate winter
Date

February 18 to 28, 2027.

Cost

Depends on the activity, details in the program on the festival website.

Downtown Montreal — sites and venues listed in the official program.

Ending winter with a festival. From February 18 to 28, 2027, MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE returns to brighten the end of winter. This edition's program will be published on the official website; the date of the 2027 Nuit blanche has not been announced yet. For one last big winter outing for two, just after Valentine's Day.

One of Montreal's big winter festivals. A festival of outings, lights and activities in the depth of winter.

For many Montrealers, it's the sign that the hardest part of winter is over.

Good to know for newcomers

Good to know for newcomers. Many lovely winter outings cost nothing: the Christmas market and the Esplanade Tranquille rink are free, and the Museum of Fine Arts is half price on Wednesday evenings. For the spa and AURA, book ahead, especially around the holidays and Valentine's Day. And dress warmly even for an outing “in town”: between the métro and the activity, you often spend more time outdoors than you expect.
